# How to read a coordinate

> Every piece of work carries an address. Here is how to read it.

Every piece of work we produce carries a small address, which you will see on project tickets, deliverable footers, and in your monthly audit. It looks like this.

```text theme={null}
AAA · § 1.1.1 · A1
```

<iframe className="w-full aspect-video rounded-xl" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/wTBZNEPEEC8" title="§ 0.4 Reading a coordinate" frameBorder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowFullScreen />

Read left to right, it says who the work is for, where it sits in the manuscript, and which stage of your buyer’s journey it serves.

The first part is a short code for your company. The middle part is the location—chapter, then section, then the specific piece. So § 1.1.1 is Chapter 1, section 1, first piece: the messaging document. The last part is the funnel stage.

This helps us keep track of what we’re producing and how it serves the overall story, business, and performance data, particularly when it comes to the monthly audit. Creating a systematic way to track and report on our work also allows AI agents to better analyze the data and provide strategic insights.

## The four stages

| Code | Stage | What the work is doing |
| ---- | --------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| A1 | Awareness | The buyer does not know you exist, and the work serves discovery |
| A2 | Affinity | The buyer knows you but is not ready, and the work builds trust over time |
| A3 | Action | The buyer is in market, and the work converts intent into commitment |
| A4 | Advocacy | The buyer has bought and is happy, and the work generates referrals and stories |

The stage is a separate axis from the location. A piece always has both, which is what lets us answer a question most marketing reporting cannot: not just what did we make, but which part of the buying journey did we actually serve.

It is also how imbalance becomes visible. A quarter that produced eleven A1 pieces and nothing at A3 is a quarter that filled the top of the funnel and left the bottom alone. That is sometimes the right call. It should never be an accident.

## Why you will keep seeing it

The coordinate is the reason we can find any piece of work in about ninety seconds, and the reason your audit can compare this quarter to last quarter honestly. You do not need to memorize it. But when you see § 3.2.1 on a ticket and want to know what it is, this site is organized on exactly the same numbering, so the address will always find the page.

## The status words

The audit uses four words and only these four, so that “steady” always means the same thing in March as it did in January.

| Word            | What it means                                                                      |
| --------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Strong | Performing at or above benchmark. Protect it and do more of it. |
| Steady | Working, but not optimized. Refine when there is capacity. |
| Weak | Underperforming or causing concern. Intervention required. |
| Not yet running | Has not started. Either still in the baseline period or awaiting a scope decision. |
