What this is

The master messaging document, built from the five core questions. It defines your voice, your value proposition, the language your audience actually uses, your differentiators, and the handful of narratives you will return to over and over. Everything downstream inherits from it. Website copy, podcast framing, email, social, sales collateral, and the visual identity brief all cite this document, which means that when it changes, we know exactly what else needs to change. It is the single reference that keeps a year of work sounding like one company rather than eleven freelancers. This is not a tagline exercise. A tagline may fall out of it, but a tagline arrived at without the underlying answers is a nice sentence that could belong to anyone in your category.

What we need from you

A workshop of about two hours with the founder or executive team, ideally with one or two others in the room—whoever runs sales, whoever holds the closest relationships with your best customers. If you can get an actual customer on a call at some point in the process, that’s ideal. Depending on complexity we may run three to five conversations rather than one, each around sixty minutes. We will tell you up front which shape yours is. Beforehand, send us what already exists. The current site, the sales deck, the emails that get replies, any prior positioning work, and the last twelve months of closed-won and closed-lost if you track it. We read all of it before the workshop so the session pressure-tests a hypothesis instead of starting from a blank page.

What you will have

A written document, usually substantial, structured so you can hand a section of it to a new hire and have them sound like you by their second week. It covers who you are for, the category you compete in, why anyone buys in that category, what actually stands between you and a closed deal, and the one sentence that says why it is you. Alongside that, the layered context that determines how the brand sounds rather than what it claims—tone, voice, the one or two themes you return to obsessively, and the driving force behind why the company exists at all.

How long it takes

Two to four weeks from the workshop to an approved document. The drafting happens within a couple of days of the conversation while the language is still warm. The rest of the time is your review and one or two rounds of revision.

What this is not

It is not a campaign brief—that is campaign strategy. It is not a twelve-month plan—that is the go-to-market plan. And if you already have a messaging document that is directionally right and needs updating rather than rebuilding, that is a messaging refresh and costs considerably less.
